About Key West

Key West Quick Facts

Geography:

We’re on a two by four mile island connected to the mainland by a chain of 57 bridges. It’s the closest you’ll get to the equator while still being in the continental United States. Even though we are also known as the Conch Republic, a passport is not required at the frontier.

Languages Spoken:

In Key West, we speak English, Spanish, Creole and Conch with varying degrees of fluency depending on cocktail consumption at the time.

Time Difference:

“It’s five o’clock somewhere.”

Population:

We’re a highly diverse population of around 26,000 in the summer season and swelling to over 50,000 when our snowbird friends return for the winter. Official city motto: “One Human Family.”

Climate:

Pack your sun screen as we have an average of 3150 hours of sunlight per year. The average temperature in Key West is 77 ° F. The only frost you’ll ever see in Key West is on the side of your pitcher of frozen Margaritas.

Getting Around:

Feet, bicycles, feet, electric cars, feet, pedicabs, feet, taxis. Oh, did we mention feet?

The Trough:

Key West features over 300 bars and restaurants providing 18,400 restaurant seats. You’ll be neither thirsty nor hungry.

History:

Caribbean pirates, wreckers (kind of a pirate), spongers (not the kind looking for a handout), cigar makers, Spanish treasure, an overseas railroad and too much more to mention. Immerse yourself and be amazed at how much has happened in such a small place!

What to do, what to do:

Arts, music, theater, writing, museums, butterflies, world class restaurants, the infamous Duval Crawl, sun, water, stunning sunsets and, of course, the all important character watching. You won’t be bored and you will see why our destination is considered “Close to Perfect, Far from Normal.”
